How To Live A Happy Life (no matter what)

How To Live A Happy LifeAre you unhappy?  You don’t have to be.  You can learn how to live a happy life. It won’t cost you a cent to change your fortunes either.  And since unhappiness creates sickness, it is something you and everyone on this planet can do to improve health.

There’s No Better Time Than Right Now!

We were made to be happy.  Your happiness isn’t tied to how traumatized your life is.  The truth is, you can start feeling happy right now.  In his book, You Can Be Happy No Matter What, Dr. Richard Carlson explains how.  Here is a snapshot of his main thoughts in my own words:

1 Realize that your thinking, not your circumstances, determines how you feel.  Thought is only a function and doesn’t necessarily represent reality.  Every day thousands of thoughts dance through your mind.  You have the choice of which ones to validate and which ones to blow off.  Your choice determines your feelings, negative or positive.

You grow up with yourself and become so accustom to thinking your thoughts that it is easy to give them too much weight.  Don’t do it, or your happiness will yo-yo with your circumstances.

2 Your life doesn’t change with your moods.  Only your perception of yourself does.  You see the story of your life differently at different times.  You can’t avoid your constantly changing mood, but you can change your perspective.  Remember that this, too, shall pass.  Don’t take your low moods too seriously.

Resist the urge to try to solve your problems and confront people in a low mood.  Wait until it rises, which it will, and your wisdom returns.

3 Everyone has a different world view.  Your thoughts and moods are so different from anyone else that it is impossible for others to see things exactly your way, so don’t try to change them. Your knowledge and past bring a unique interpretation of life and frame of reference.

Don’t be frustrated, angry, and domineering with the differences of others.  Instead, take genuine interest in their view of life and respect it.  Come with an attitude of sharing.  When you approach others this way, there is no reason to take differences personally.  Shields will drop and camaraderie and happiness will be the result.

4 Negative feelings are an accurate barometer of dysfunctional thought and can be used as a directional guide back to happiness.  These feelings are distorted feelings which flow from making wrong choices with our thoughts.  Distrust them.

When we understand this we can let them alone and realize the truth: that happiness is already with us, buried under a mountain of negative thought.  Just realizing this can help us move back to our natural state of happiness, where we feel positive, content, and creative.

Emotional Healing5 Happiness is living in the present moment.  Most of the time thoughts centered in the present are peaceful and happy, but thoughts from the past and of the future can take us quickly from that calm into a state of turmoil.

The solution is to look out for thoughts that are spinning into the problems of the future or falling back into the frustrations of the past.  Come back to the present.  The present is where productivity, creativity and accomplishment happen.  It is the place we will feel most happy and satisfied.

These ideas are critical for putting our mind in a better place, a place where we can actually be happy in a messed up world.
