No One Else Will!
“If you listen to the patient they will usually give you the diagnosis and if you listen even more carefully they will likely indicate the best treatment for them.” -Sir William Osler
Our Birthright?
When it comes to health, many of us have abdicated responsibility. We feel it is our birthright to use and abuse as we see fit and then, when it falters, we expect a magic pill to heal us and give us back our vitality.
One By One
When the weight of the house of sickness comes crashing down around us, we cry out like Frodo did in Lord of the Rings, “Help! I cannot do this alone. I don’t know what to do and I do not have the strength to do it.”
We pray for a magic pill or procedure to cure us. But we forget that no matter how many others press around us in life, there are some things that we must do alone. Each of us must walk that lonely path for no one else can fully enter inside us. Ella Wilcox said it well in the parting lines her poem:
“There is room in the halls of pleasure
For a long and lordly train,
But one by one we must all file on
Through the narrow aisles of pain.”
No One Else Can Find The Strength To Begin
Lady Galadriel’s answer to Frodo was, “You are a Ring-bearer Frodo. To bear a ring is to be alone…this task was appointed to you, and if you do not find a way, no one will.”
That is the simple truth. Each of us alone must reach out and take back the responsibility we have given up. We each know our bodies better than anyone else. It may be a long and perilous journey back to health but, unless we start, we will never get there. The way and the wisdom are waiting for our choice and action.
Our Bodies Are Waiting
Disease is not the normal state of our bodies. In fact, our bodies try their hardest to stay healthy and in balance. They know the way to health. They are powerful machines that will respond to our action and courage if we will take responsibility and begin doing the things that will heal us.
Our bodies are waiting for assistance from us to move on toward that healing miracle. As Dr. Richard Schulze says, “Tomorrow is what you believe and do today. You just have to stop what you did that made you sick and start doing what will make you healthy.”
Take Back Your Power!
We only get one shot at life here. It is our choice to feel it, to respond, and then to follow it to vibrant life. Don’t be afraid. Embrace responsibility for your body and you will be richly rewarded. In this way all of us can change the course of our future.
As Bob Beck said, “Take back your power!” Take back your responsibility. If you don’t, no one else will.
