Greater Giving Boosts Health

By admin On April 16, 2012 Under Formulas

Giving to others is certainly one of best and most affordable health cures.  We all know what giving feels like from childhood, a feeling which is referred to as the “helper’s high”.  It turns out that this is more than just a feeling.  Giving is good for the mind, spirit, and body.

Benefits of Altruism

Reaching out to help results in better health:

  • It promotes a strengthened immune system.
  • It generates positive emotions, improving attitudes that damage the body.
  • It decreases pain by releasing endorphins.
  • It reduces stress.
  • It produces a “helper’s high”, which is a rush of euphoria that is followed by an extended period of calm and well-being.

Research Seems to Show What We Already Know

  • Allan Luks has studied the Helper’s High extensively.  According to his research, 90 percent of those who give rate their health higher than those who don’t.
  • In another study of 2700 men, death rates were two and a half times lower for those who did regular volunteer work.
  • Harvard researchers discovered what they called the “Mother Theresa Effect”.  They found that student’s immune system response actually kicked in just by watching movies of the late Mother Theresa helping the poor in India.
  • ABC New 20/20 told the story of an experiment carried out by Duke University Medical Center.  Effects from the helper’s high were dramatically displayed when recovering heart patients were asked to visit current heart patients, just to listen and lend support.  Amazingly, the rate of recovery of the volunteers was 60 percent faster than those who didn’t help other patients.
  • The University of Miami did a study that followed HIV patients who were active in talking to teenagers or counseling HIV survivors.  HIV patients who helped others had lower stress levels and higher immune resistence, including dramatic increases in disease-fighting cells.

Helping Has Many Faces

There are many things we can do to give ourselves to others.  From giving a back rub to listening to a friend to helping with the local meals on wheels, there is no end to the possibilities for helping others.  The world is full of need.  It doesn’t matter what we do.  It is the heart of it that counts.

Making A Unique Difference

Each of us has a different set of abilities.  These unique skills can be used to change our world, or not.  We must not get discouraged if it seems our impact is small.  The world is saved one individual at a time.  We don’t have to do incredible things to make a difference.  The most important thing is to use the gifts we have been given to do what we can.

Great Ideas for Helping

Outside of the multitude of simple things we can do for those in our sphere of influence, here as some great places where a little giving can go a long way.

  • The Local Food Bank

A few dollars, given consistently, makes a big difference in the resources food banks have for those in need in our neighborhood.

A creative idea for building sturdy school buildings for a lot less is changing the world.  The One Day School is a project where it doesn’t take much to make a huge difference.

In today’s world, right role models portraying beneficial decision making strategies are scarce.  Children can be inspired to make sound choices by exposure to dramatized stories evidencing the positive results of developing character traits such as honesty, integrity, courage and faith.  Your Story Hour does just that.  It inspires and encourages thousands of children around the world.  Giving a little here makes a big difference in the lives of many children.

Among many other things, Franklin Graham’s organization is making a powerful impact on the world with their water ministry.  Freshwater wells and water purification/sanitation systems are lifesavors in many parts of the world.  Here is a great place where a little goes a long ways.

The  Adventist Development and Relief Agency’s work in establishing livelihoods in many of the poorest and most oppressed areas of the world is definitely a place where a little giving means a lot of hope.

Prison Fellowship International is another organization that is transforming lives around the world.

Not Just a Small Step

Changing our attitude to one of giving is not just a small stride toward good health.  It is not so much that the world needs our help as it is that we need to give it.  The euphoric rushes that result from the decision to live our lives like this bring us to better health of mind, spirit, and body.
