Magnesium Oil

Why Magnesium Oil?

There is a growing body of evidence that most people are deficient in the mineral magnesium.  This wouldn’t be so critical if it didn’t have as big and varied a role in the human body. But it is the four most prevalent mineral in the body, responsible for such vital tasks as nerve function and muscle contraction. Its deficiency is just one more factor in the cause of chronic disorders such as fibromyalgia, migraine, heart disease and cancer.  Most pain is the result of overstressed cells, and sufficient magnesium alleviates this stress.

An Absorption Problem

The problem with taking magnesium orally is that it is not easily absorbed in the digestive tract.  But the skin assimilates it very well.  Taking it as magnesium chloride, found in ocean water, is most bio friendly since it is much more easily taken into your body and metabolized than other forms (such as Epsom salts).   So using magnesium in a bath or rubbing magnesium oil on the skin are both great ways to increase your magnesium levels.

rubbing1 Magnesium OilIf you prefer to rub (or spray) the magnesium oil into your skin instead of soaking in bath salts, it is easy to make (and cheaper, since in a bath much is lost down the drain).

Things You’ll Need

  • Nigari flakes Magnesium chloride is used in making tofu.  This is an inexpensive source (less than $2/lb) where you can get it without spending a fortune on some exotic Dead Sea salt that has been revered for 5000 years.  Most Asian food stores carry Nigari where they keep their tofu making supplies.
  • Purified water
  • Quart jar or bottle with lid

Here is how to make it:

  • Fill your jar up with Nigari flakes.  Fill it loosely.  Don’t pack the flakes down.  A one-pound bag should fill at least two jars.
  • Slowly add one or two cups of purified water, just enough to cover the flakes completely.  Be careful not to overflow the jar since the water will absorb into the flakes gradually.
  • Wait a bit and add more water if needed.
  • Let sit for two or three days to allow the the water and flakes to fully incorporate.
  • There is actually no oil in the mixture but it will look and feel like there is.  Once it has reached this stage, it is ready to use.

Rub into the skin thoroughly to replenish your cells magnesium supply or to soothe aching muscles and joints.  It takes about 20 minutes to be absorbed through your skin.

Or Alternately, You Can Soak In Nigari Flakes

Soaking in magnesium chloride is an overall tonic that raises your body’s levels of this important mineral.

  • Add 1 to 3 cups of nigari flakes to a tub of warm (not hot) water and soak in it until the water gets too cold for comfort.
  • Fibromyalgia and migraine sufferers, as well as those with high blood pressure and heart problems, can benefit from this soak three or four times a week until their magnesium levels have normalized.
  • This bath will have an immediate effect on muscles.
  • For maintenance, soak two times a week.

Magnesium Chloride Vs Magnesium Sulfate

According to Daniel Reid, author of The Tao of Detox, magnesium sulfate, commonly known as Epsom salts, is rapidly excreted through the kidneys and therefore difficult to assimilate. This would explain in part why the effects from Epsom salt baths do not last long and why you need more magnesium sulfate in a bath than magnesium chloride to get similar results. Magnesium chloride is easily assimilated and metabolized in the human body.

One will increase your chloride while the other will increase your sulfate. The trick is to use a comination of both to properly balance the chloride and sulfide in your water column.

Chloride is required to produce a large quantity of gastric acid each day and is also needed to stimulate starch-digesting enzymes.

Sulfate is also important and has an influence over almost every cellular function. Sulfate attaches to phenols and makes them less harmful, and sets them up for being excreted from your kidneys. A lot of these potentially toxic molecules are in food. Sulfate is also used to regulate the performance of many other molecules. Many systems in the body will not function well in a low-sulfate environment. Sulfur is so critical to life that the body will apparently borrow protein from the muscles to keep from running too low.

Considering that the two salts have both similar and proper effects, a clear-cut conclusion is not easy to draw. However, choosing MgCl2 seems advisable because of its more interesting clinical and pharmacological effects and its lower tissue toxicity as compared to MgSO4 (toxicity is not an issue at low normal bath doses however).

Making your own magnesium oil from affordable sources is another way you can easily increase your health without breaking the budget.  It is a time honored and effective way to heal yourself.
